The copies

Witness

Matthew jumps a verse. The prayer stops. Two strokes decide God or He.

Walk the copies. KJV often keeps the longer reading. BSB follows the older books. When a post says theft, we show you the page. A missing verse is often still in Mark. This is not a decoder ring for villains.

The gaps

A line sits in the KJV and not in the oldest copy. It is often still in Mark or Luke.

The joins

An Amen was added. A hard stop was kept. Sweat like blood is argued. A woman the church would not lose.

The words

The copies disagree on God or He, on blood, on three that testify, and on God or Son.

The gaps · 12 of 15 · The water was enough

I believe

The Ethiopian still goes down into the water. The baptism question is what a later church expected to hear.

King James (1611)
And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Berean Standard Bible
Not in the BSB, WEB, or ASV main text. Acts 8:36 then 8:38: “What prevents me?” — and they go down into the water.

The seam

  1. 01Isaiah, in the chariot

    Acts 8:32

He is like a lamb silent before its shearers. Philip begins with that Scripture and tells him the good news about Jesus. The confession is already happening.

  2. 02What prevents me?

    Acts 8:36

Here is water. The oldest copies do not pause for a catechism. They go down. The later verse is the catechism, written in.

  3. 03They went down into the water

    Acts 8:38

Philip baptizes him. The Spirit takes Philip. The eunuch goes on rejoicing. None of that waits on verse 37.

Read it this way

The Ethiopian has been reading Isaiah 53. Philip opens his mouth and tells him the good news about Jesus. They come to water. “What prevents me from being baptized?” The oldest copies go straight to 8:38: they go down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptizes him.

Verse 37 sounds like a baptism question written into Philip’s mouth: if you believe with all your heart, you may. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. That is a church the later centuries wanted to hear beside every font. It is missing from the great early copies. It is missing from WEB and BSB. KJV keeps the dialogue.

The Son of God is confessed on every page of Acts. This one church reply did not stand in the oldest copies of chapter 8. The man still believes. He still goes down. The Spirit still snatches Philip away. The water was enough.

Some sayThey removed the confession “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

The Son of God is confessed on every page of Acts. This one church reply did not stand in the oldest copies of chapter 8.
