What manner of spirit
They want fire on a village. He rebukes them. The extra sentences are how later copies named the rebuke.
But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
But Jesus turned and rebuked them. And He and His disciples went on to another village.

01Fire on the village
Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them? James and John have Elijah in their mouths. The village said no.
02He turned and rebuked them
The oldest copies stop there. The rebuke is real. The extra sentences are how later copies filled the silence they could not bear.
03To save, not destroy
God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. The line the later Luke copies wanted here is already John’s.
04The seeking Son
The man is Zacchaeus, in the same Gospel. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. You do not need 9:56 to hear it.

Read it this way
A Samaritan village will not receive Him, because His face is set toward Jerusalem. James and John ask if they should call down fire, the way Elijah did. The oldest Luke says only this: He turned and rebuked them. Then they went to another village.
Later copies name the rebuke. “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. The Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” That is Luke’s Jesus. It is also Luke 19:10, and John 3:17. A scribe who loved those lines often wrote them here so the rebuke would not sit as a silence.
WEB, BSB, and ASV follow the older, shorter Luke. KJV prints the named rebuke. The saving Son is not missing from Luke. What is missing from the oldest copies of this village is the sermon that later hands were sure He had just said.
Still on the page: Luke 19:10 — For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Same Gospel. Same voice. Already on the page.
Some sayThey cut the verse where Jesus says He came to save, not destroy.
He still rebukes the fire. The oldest Luke does not pause to quote Him. Luke 19:10 already does.
