The copies

Witness

Matthew jumps a verse. The prayer stops. Two strokes decide God or He.

Walk the copies. KJV often keeps the longer reading. BSB follows the older books. When a post says theft, we show you the page. A missing verse is often still in Mark. This is not a decoder ring for villains.

The gaps

A line sits in the KJV and not in the oldest copy. It is often still in Mark or Luke.

The joins

An Amen was added. A hard stop was kept. Sweat like blood is argued. A woman the church would not lose.

The words

The copies disagree on God or He, on blood, on three that testify, and on God or Son.

The woman caught in adultery

The oldest John goes from the officers to “I am the light of the world.” The woman is real. She just had no home in those copies.

King James (1611)
He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her… Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Berean Standard Bible
Printed in BSB, WEB, KJV, and ASV. The earliest copies of John skip from 7:52 to 8:12. Some later copies place the story after Luke 21, or at the end of John.

How it sat

  1. 01Never has a man spoken like this

    John 7:46

The officers come back empty-handed. The oldest John then has Jesus say, I am the light of the world. No stones in between.

  2. 02A story with several doorways

    John 8:3

Some later copies put her here. Some after Luke 21. Some at the end of John. A story that moves is a story people would not drop.

  3. 03Neither do I condemn you

    John 8:11

Go, and sin no more. Every Bible on this shelf prints it. The oldest John does not. We keep both facts on the table.

  4. 04I am the light of the world

    John 8:12

This is where the oldest copies land after 7:52. The light does not need the woman to be true. The woman does not need this slot to be loved.

Read it this way

The oldest John goes from the officers — “never has a man spoken like this” — to “I am the light of the world.” There is no woman, no stones, and no finger in the dust. Papyrus 66, papyrus 75, Sinaiticus, Vaticanus: the story is not there. The style shifts when it appears. Copies disagree on where to put it: here, after Luke 21, at the end of John.

That is the opposite of a quiet deletion. A loved story looking for a home. The church refused to lose her. Augustine already knew some people omitted it because they were afraid it made the Lord too gentle with adultery. We print it. We tell you the oldest John does not.

Mercy is not being erased. “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more” is how the church remembered Him with a woman on the ground. The copies will not let you pretend John wrote it in this slot. They will also not let you throw her out.

Some sayThey are erasing the story of mercy.

Mercy is not being erased. The church refused to lose the woman. We print both facts.
