Son of God
Your four Bibles agree. Two old copies hesitate on the title. Mark will not leave you in doubt for long.
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Ἀρχὴ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ υἱοῦ θεοῦ
Most copies, and every Bible here
The gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
A thin early stream
The gospel of Jesus Christ.
The two readings
01The first line
Beginning of the gospel. Jesus Christ. Most copies add: the Son of God. A few of the oldest hesitate. Your four Bibles do not.
02A voice at the water
You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased. Mark does not wait long, even if 1:1 is short.
03A voice on the mountain
This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him. The title is not a gloss at the door. It is the plot.
04A soldier at the cross
Truly this Man was the Son of God. Mark’s last human word on it is a Gentile looking up. The first line was never the only line.

Read it this way
This room is here because the posts like a first-verse scandal. KJV, WEB, BSB, and ASV all print “the Son of God.” Vaticanus has it. Most of the Greek has it. A thin early stream — Sinaiticus before correction, a handful of others — starts Mark with “the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ” and stops.
Even if you walk that thinner line, Mark does not stay quiet. At the baptism a voice says, You are My beloved Son. At the transfiguration, the voice says the same. At the cross a Roman says it out loud. The title is not hanging from one clause at 1:1 the way a conspiracy needs it to.
υἱός (huios) is son. It is not a code. It is a name Mark spends sixteen chapters teaching you to hear. Some first copies may have opened without it. The Gospel does not.
Some sayThe first verse of Mark never called Jesus the Son of God. They added it.
The Son is not waiting on Mark’s first six words. The voice at the water already says it.
