The gaps · 07 of 15 · Luke kept the quote
Numbered with criminals
Jesus already quoted Isaiah in Luke. Later Mark copies wanted that line at the cross too.
And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

The seam
01Between two robbers
They crucify two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. The oldest Mark lets that picture stand. The prophet is already in the frame.
02The footnote, later
Later copies write the citation in. And the Scripture was fulfilled. The KJV numbers it. The two robbers were already enough.
03He quoted it Himself
This Scripture must be fulfilled in Me: He was numbered with the transgressors. Isaiah 53:12, in His own mouth, the night before.

Read it this way
Mark 15 is the crucifixion. They crucify Him between two robbers. The oldest copies do not pause to say “this fulfilled Isaiah.” They just put Him there. The picture is the citation.
Luke already has Jesus quoting Isaiah 53:12 before the night is over: He was numbered with the transgressors. Later Mark copies added the citation at the cross so Mark would “have” the proof-text too. A scribe who loved the Servant song wanted the footnote on the same page as the nails.
Isaiah is not missing. Luke kept Jesus using it Himself. Mark’s oldest copies let the two robbers do the quoting, without a verse number for the prophet.
Still on the page: Luke 22:37 — He was numbered with the transgressors — Isaiah 53:12, said by Jesus in Luke.
Some sayThey hid the prophecy that He was numbered with the transgressors.
Isaiah is not missing. Luke kept Jesus using it Himself.
