I AM who I AM
A bush burns and is not eaten. The name cannot be held still in the hand. Then a Man says it of Himself.
God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.
What happens
01The bush is not eaten
The angel of the Lord appears in a flame. The bush burns. It is not consumed. Moses turns aside to see.
02I AM who I AM
Moses wants a name to carry to the people. God gives one that does not shrink: I AM. Then He says, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
03Before Abraham was
The argument is about age. Jesus will not stay in that argument. Before Abraham was, I AM. They reach for stones.
04I AM. You will see the Son of Man
Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? I AM. And you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power. The high priest tears his clothes.
Read it this way
Moses turns aside to a bush on fire that is not consumed. God speaks from it. Moses asks for a name. The answer is ehyeh asher ehyeh — I AM who I AM, I will be what I will be. It is not a lucky phrase. It is a name that will not sit still in the hand.
Jesus later says, before Abraham was, I AM. They pick up stones. At His trial He is asked if He is the Christ, the Son of the Blessed. He says I AM. They call it blasphemy. The bush was never a puzzle. It was a name. He put it in His own mouth.
Some sayI AM is a riddle. Jesus quoting it is later Greek cleverness.
The name in the bush does not stay in the bush. He says it of Himself, and they know what they heard.
