The line · 02 of 26 · Genesis 5
Adam to Noah
Ten names. A preacher made them one English sentence. Some of that sentence is real Hebrew. Some of it is not.
This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.
The string
man · appointed · mortal man · Sorrow · praise of God · descent · dedicated · man of the dart · The despairing · rest
Gold is the Hebrew. Strike-through is the sermon, not the name. Close sits in between.
man, mankind, of the ground
From adamah, the ground. Dust with a name. That is where the line starts.
appointed, set, placed
Eve says it herself, Genesis 4:25: God has given me another child in Abel’s place. The Bible already translates this one.
mortal man, frail humanity
Enosh is the word for a man when the point is that he dies. Psalm 8 uses it that way. Mortal is fair.
possession, smith, acquired
The sermon says “Sorrow”
Linked to Cain, or to qanah — to get, to own — or to a metal-worker. “Sorrow” is not what the Hebrew says.
praise of God, El is praised
The sermon says “The Blessed God”
Mahalal (praise) plus El (God). The Hebrew is “praise of God,” not “the Blessed God.” It is close. It is not the same sentence.
descent, he comes down
From yarad, to go down. The name means descent. This one does not need help.
dedicated, initiated, trained
The sermon says “Teaching”
From chanak — to dedicate, to start, to train a child (Proverbs 22:6). “Teaching” is nearby. Dedicated is closer.
man of the dart, when he dies, it is sent
The sermon says “His death shall bring”
Two readings: “man of the spear,” or “when he dies, it is sent.” Genesis 5 puts his death in the year of the flood. That timing is in the text. The English slogan is one reading, not the only one.
uncertain
The sermon says “The despairing”
We do not know the root. “The despairing” is a preacher’s guess. Do not force a word the Hebrew does not give.
rest, comfort, relief
Lamech names him in Genesis 5:29: this one will comfort us. Rest is not a code. It is the father’s own mouth.
Read it this way
Genesis 5 is a family line of death. Adam lives, and he dies. Seth lives, and he dies. Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch — who walks with God and is not, for God took him — Methuselah, Lamech. The names go on, again and again, until Noah. Of Noah the father says, in the open: this one will comfort us from the ground the Lord has cursed. Hebrew names mean things. Eve tells you Seth is appointed. Lamech tells you Noah is rest. That is on the page.
A popular sermon strings all ten names into one English gospel sentence: man appointed mortal sorrow; the blessed God shall come down teaching; His death shall bring the despairing rest. Walk the names below. Gold is the Hebrew. Close sits nearby. Strike-through is the sermon, not the name. God did not hide a crossword. He named a line that runs from dust toward rest. Luke follows that same line all the way to Jesus.
Some sayJoin Adam to Noah and they already preach Jesus: Man appointed mortal sorrow; the Blessed God shall come down teaching; His death shall bring the despairing rest.
