Jubilee — release
A ram’s horn. Slaves go free. Land goes home. He opens Isaiah and says, today.
You shall consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you.
The appointed time
01Seven sevens of years
Seven weeks of years, seven times seven. Then the horn. The year is counted, not guessed.
02Proclaim liberty
Throughout the land, to all its inhabitants. Return to your property. Return to your clan. A whole people, let go.
03The year of the Lord’s favour
He brings good news to the poor, liberty to the captives, and the year of the Lord’s favour. Isaiah is already speaking Leviticus in a loud voice.
04Today this is fulfilled
He sits down. The eyes of all in the synagogue are on Him. Today, in your hearing. They speak well of Him. Then they try to kill Him.
Held
A slave, a debt, a field that left the family
Released
Liberty through the land. Today, in your hearing.
Read it this way
After seven sevens of years comes a fiftieth year. Yobel (יוֹבֵל) is a ram’s horn, and it is also the year that horn announces. That year is liberty. Everyone returns to his property and to his clan. Debts are eased. The land itself rests. You do not squeeze a brother. The year is not a metaphor. It is an order to let go.
In Nazareth Jesus opens Isaiah: the Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor, liberty to the captives, the year of the Lord’s favour. He rolls the scroll up. Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. Isaiah’s year is jubilee language. We do not have to prove the calendar math of a given spring. He claimed the year. They tried to throw Him off a cliff.
Some sayJubilee is land law. Jesus reading Isaiah in Nazareth is not that year.
The horn meant release. He read the year out loud and sat down. Today, He said.
