The curtain that tore
A curtain no one walks through. Then it tears — from the top.
The curtain will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. You shall hang the curtain under the clasps.
What happens
01The last wall
Hang the curtain. It separates the Holy Place from the Most Holy. Behind it sits the ark. The presence is not public.
02One man, one day
Tell your brother Aaron not to come whenever he chooses behind the curtain, or he will die. Blood, and a day, and a name.
03From top to bottom
Jesus cries out, and yields His spirit. The curtain of the temple is torn in two from top to bottom. Earth shakes. Rocks split. The tear starts above.
04A new and living way
We have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, through the curtain — that is, His body.
The way in
One man, one day a year, with blood, or he dies
Then the wall
Tears from top to bottom. A new and living way.
Read it this way
In the tent, then in the temple, a thick curtain hangs as the last wall. The Hebrew is paroket (פָּרֹכֶת). Behind it is the lid of the ark — the place of God’s presence. One man, the high priest, walks through it one day a year, with blood, or he dies.
At the hour Jesus dies, that curtain tears from top to bottom. It does not tear from the crowd pushing. It tears from above. Hebrews says the new and living way in is through the curtain — that is, His body. The Law already had the wall. The cross took it down.
Some sayThe torn curtain is a nice Good Friday image. It does not mean anything in the Law.
The way in was never a mood. It was a body, torn. The Law already had the wall. The cross took it down.
