The Sabbath as a sign
God names the seventh day a sign. Then the Son of Man says He is Lord of it.
Above all you shall keep My Sabbaths, for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you.
What happens
01God rested
The seventh day is not first a rule. It is God sitting down. The week arrives where He already was.
02A sign between Me and you
Keep My Sabbaths. A sign throughout your generations. That you may know I, the Lord, sanctify you. Named as a sign, in the open.
03The Sabbath was made for man
His disciples pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees object. He reminds them of David and the holy bread. Then this sentence.
04Lord of the Sabbath
The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. He does not pick the lock. He owns the day.
05Let no one judge you
A festival, a new moon, a Sabbath. Shadows of what was to come. The substance belongs to Christ. Paul will not let the sign become a new cage.
Read it this way
Shabbat (שַׁבָּת) is stop, cease, rest. In Exodus 31 God does not call it a puzzle. He calls it a sign — between Him and Israel, forever, because in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh He rested and was refreshed. A people who stop are a people who know they are not God.
Jesus does not treat the day as a lock. His disciples pluck grain. He heals. He says the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. Paul later tells a church not to let anyone judge them about a Sabbath. We do not turn the sign into a new code, and we do not pretend He never claimed the day. He did.
Some sayThe Sabbath is a secret Christian code. Keep it a certain way and you unlock the end.
The seventh day is a sign that God finished something. He then walked into the day and said it was His.
