The seed of the woman
The first promise in the Bible is a war. A heel will be struck, a head will be crushed, and the promise names a He.
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike His heel.
What happens
01They hide
They hear the Lord God walking in the garden. They sew leaves. They hide among the trees. Sin starts with a meal and a lie. It does not start with a code.
02A sentence on the snake
God speaks to the serpent first. You are cursed. You will go on your belly, and you will eat dust. Then the next sentence names a war that is not over when the garden closes.
03Her seed. A He.
There will be enmity between the snake and the woman, and between his seed and hers. He will crush your head. You will strike His heel. The Hebrew points at a person, not a slogan.
04Born of a woman
When the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law. Paul is not decoding Genesis. He is naming who arrived.
05Flesh, then the one who holds death
He shared their humanity so that by His death He might break the one who holds the power of death. The heel is struck. The head does not win.
Read it this way
Adam and Eve have just eaten what God forbade. They hide. God finds them. Then He speaks to the snake. It is not a poem. It is a sentence with a He in it.
Zera (זֶרַע) is seed: a child, a family line. It is not an idea. Shuph (שׁוּף) is to crush, or to strike. The snake will hit that child’s heel. That child will crush the snake’s head. From the first sin, the Bible already has a war. It already has an ending.
Paul says the Son was born of a woman. Romans says God will crush Satan under your feet. Hebrews says Jesus shared our flesh so He could break the one who holds death. The first good news is a Person.
Then it is named
The other room. Same line. A Person with a name.
Some sayJesus is hidden in a code. Crack the Old Testament and you find Him.
The first good news is spoken out loud. This sentence was waiting for a Son.
