The line · 19 of 26 · Psalm 118 · Isaiah 28
The stone the builders refused
The builders said no. Then it became the corner. He quoted it about Himself.
The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes.
What happens
01The stone they refused
Builders inspect, and say no. Then it is the head of the corner. The psalm already calls that the Lord’s doing.
02A stone in Zion
A tested stone. God lays a precious cornerstone. Whoever believes will not be in haste. Trust, not panic, on that stone.
03Have you never read?
After the vineyard. Jesus puts the psalm in their mouths. The rejected stone. They know He is talking about them.
04You builders
Peter does not soften it. This Jesus is the stone you builders rejected. Salvation in no other name.
05A living stone
Peter writes Isaiah onto the church. Coming to Him, a living stone, rejected by men, chosen by God. Then you too, living stones.
The builders
Threw it out. Not this one.
The Lord
Made it the corner. Marvellous in our eyes.
Read it this way
Eben (אֶבֶן) is a stone. Psalm 118 is a procession: open the gates, this is the day the Lord has made. In the middle of it, a stone the builders threw away becomes the head of the corner. Isaiah had already said: I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone. Whoever believes will not panic.
Jesus tells a vineyard story, then opens this psalm on the men who are about to kill Him. Have you never read? Peter, in front of the same council, says this Jesus is the stone you builders rejected. Peter later writes the Isaiah line onto the church: a living stone, and you living stones with Him. He did not invent the picture. He stood in it.
Some sayCornerstone is church architecture talk. The psalm is about a king’s parade.
He quoted the psalm about Himself while the builders were in the room. That is not later church talk.
