From the beginning

Foretold

Jesus said Moses wrote about Him. It is not a secret code. It is a lot of page: a line, the numbers He counted, the signs He named, and the days He appointed.

Walk it the way the text walks. The Hebrew is still on the page. When a preacher stretched a name, or forced a number, we say so.

The numbers

It counts a week, a wait, and a people, then fourteen generations, ten words, a third day, seventy, and a tally.

The signs

He named them Himself: a fish, a star, a prophet, a rest, and a bow.

The days

These are appointed times: first fruit, fifty days, booths, and a year of release.

The line · 26 of 26 · Jeremiah 31:31

A covenant written on the heart

It is not like the covenant they broke. The law is written inside, and sins are remembered no more.

The text
Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. Not like the covenant I made with their fathers.

The word

בְּרִית

covenant, a binding, cut and kept (berit)

What happens

  1. 01Not like the one they broke

    Jeremiah 31:32

I was a husband to them, declares the Lord. They broke it. The new one is not a patch on Sinai. It is new.

  2. 02On their hearts

    Jeremiah 31:33

I will put My law within them. I will write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people.

  3. 03I will remember their sin no more

    Jeremiah 31:34

They will all know Me, from the least to the greatest. Forgiveness is not a mood God tries. It is the promise of the new binding.

  4. 04This cup is the new covenant

    Luke 22:20

After the supper. This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you. Jeremiah’s days-are-coming arrives in a room.

  5. 05He makes the first one obsolete

    Hebrews 8:13

By calling this covenant new, He has made the first one obsolete. Hebrews does not whisper it. It quotes the prophet and lets the word stand.

The first covenant

It was spoken at a mountain, written on stone, and then broken.

The new

It is written on the heart. He lifts a cup. Sins are remembered no more.

Read it this way

The old covenant was spoken at a mountain and written on stone. They broke it. Jeremiah, watching a nation come apart, hears this: days are coming. A new covenant. Berit (בְּרִית) is a binding — cut, spoken, kept. I will put My law in their inward parts. I will write it on their hearts. I will be their God. They will all know Me. I will remember their sin no more.

The night He is betrayed, Jesus takes a cup: this cup is the new covenant in My blood. Hebrews quotes Jeremiah at length and says the first covenant is growing old. The prophet already said new. The upper room did not invent the word. It filled the cup.

Then it is named

The other room. Same line. A Person with a name.

Some sayJeremiah meant a nicer version of Sinai for Israel. The cup in the upper room stole it.

Jeremiah already said new. The cup in His hand is that word, kept.

The copies sometimes differ — that is Witness. Words you already say out loud sit in Words with weight. Foretold is what the page already says. It is not a decoder ring.
