The sign of Jonah
He named the sign Himself. He would be three days down. Then a city has to decide.
A wicked generation asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
What happens
01He runs the other way
Go to Nineveh. Jonah pays the fare to Tarshish instead. He goes down into the boat, away from the presence of the Lord.
02Three days in the fish
The Lord appoints a great fish. Jonah is in its belly three days and three nights. From the deep he prays.
03A city turns
He walks into Nineveh with a short sermon. The people believe God. The king sits in ashes. The city is not swallowed.
04The only sign you get
They want a sign. He names Jonah. As Jonah was three days in the fish, the Son of Man will be three days in the heart of the earth.
05Something greater than Jonah
The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation. They repented at Jonah’s preaching. Something greater than Jonah is here.
Read it this way
Jonah is a prophet. God tells him to go to Nineveh, a city he hates. He runs the other way — down into a boat, down into the sea, down into a great fish. From the deep he prays. The fish spits him onto dry land. He walks into Nineveh. The city turns.
Teachers later ask Jesus for a sign. He says they get one: Jonah. As Jonah was three days and three nights in the fish, the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Then a city has to decide. The fish is not the point. The grave is.
Some sayJonah is a children’s fish story. Any link to Jesus was added later.
The teachers asked for a sign. He gave them Jonah, out loud. The secret was that they would not believe it when it happened.
