The line · 11 of 26 · Exodus 17 · Numbers 20
The rock that was struck
Strike the rock. Water comes out in a dry place. Paul does not whisper it: that rock was Christ.
Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, and the people will drink. Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
What happens
01They are ready to stone him
There is no water, and the people quarrel. Moses cries out. A little more and they will kill him. God answers with a rock, not an argument.
02Strike the rock
Take the staff. I will stand before you on the rock at Horeb. Strike it. Water will come out. Moses does it in sight of the elders.
03Speak. He strikes anyway
Years later: speak to the rock. Moses strikes it twice. Water still comes. He will not lead them in. The rock was not his to manage.
04That rock was Christ
They drank from a spiritual rock that followed them. Paul says the rock was Christ. He is not guessing. He is teaching the wilderness as a Person.
The people will die of
Thirst in a dry camp, ready to stone Moses
Water comes from
A rock that is struck, in front of the elders
Read it this way
The camp is in a dry place. The people are ready to stone Moses. God says: take the staff that already struck the Nile. Strike the rock. Water will come out, and the people will drink. Moses does it in front of the elders. Water runs.
Later, at Meribah, Moses is told to speak to the rock. He strikes twice instead. Water still comes. He does not enter the land. Paul looks back at the wilderness and says they all drank from a spiritual rock that followed them — and the rock was Christ. That is an apostle reading the story out loud, not a code in the Hebrew letters.
Some sayPaul is doing clever preaching. The rock in the desert is just a rock.
The people live because the rock is struck. Paul names who the rock is.
