A house that will not fall
David wants to build God a house. God builds David one instead — a son, a throne, forever.
Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before Me. Your throne will be established forever.
What happens
01I live in cedar
David looks at the tent. The ark of God sits behind curtains. He wants to fix that. Wanting a temple is not a sin. It is not the last word either.
02I will build you a house
The Lord declares that He will make a house for David. It is not boards. It is a family line, a son, and a throne.
03Forever
Your house, your kingdom, and your throne will stand forever. If the sentence is only Solomon, the sentence fails. It does not read like only Solomon.
04The throne of His father David
He will be great. He will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. Gabriel is reading Samuel out loud.
05God had sworn an oath
David was a prophet. He knew God had sworn to seat one of his descendants on his throne. He spoke of the resurrection. Peter will not let the house stay a ruin.
Read it this way
David sits in cedar. The ark sits in a tent. He wants to build God a house. Nathan says yes — then God says no. You will not build Me a house. I will build you one. Bayit (בַּיִת) is house: a building, and a family. I will raise up your seed after you. I will establish his kingdom. I will be a father to him, and your throne will stand forever.
Solomon builds a temple. The throne still wobbles. The line is cut down to a stump. Then Gabriel tells a girl in Nazareth: the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. Peter, at Pentecost, says David knew God had promised to seat one of his descendants on his throne. The house did not fall. It waited.
Some sayThe forever throne was for Solomon’s line of kings. Jesus is a later spiritualising.
David wanted walls. God promised a son. The angel still uses David’s name when the child is announced.
