Bread on the ground
Every morning, food they did not plant. Then He said, I am that bread.
When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.
What happens
01Hungry in the desert
The whole congregation grumbles. If only we had died in Egypt, by the pots of meat. Freedom looks like starving.
02What is it?
It is morning. The dew lifts, and a fine flake lies on the ground. They do not have a name for it yet. Moses says, it is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.
03Only today’s bread
No one is to keep any of it until morning. They keep it anyway. It breeds worms. On the sixth day it keeps, because rest is coming.
04Your fathers ate, and died
The crowd wants another meal. Jesus will not be a bakery. Manna kept a people alive for a while. It did not keep them forever.
05I am the bread of life
Whoever comes to Me will never hunger. He is not illustrating Exodus. He is claiming to be what the ground was carrying.
Read it this way
Israel is hungry in the desert. Each morning something lies on the ground like frost. They ask, man hu — what is it? Moses says, it is bread from God. They gather only what they need for that day. Hoard it, and it rots. On the sixth day it keeps, so the seventh can be rest.
A people lives one day at a time because God showed up on the dirt. Then Jesus feeds a crowd, and they want Him for the food. He refuses to be only a meal. Your fathers ate manna and died. I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger.
Some sayManna is wilderness survival. Jesus calling Himself bread is a later metaphor.
He does not borrow a picture. He claims to be the meal the wilderness was waiting for.
