Ten words
It is not a lucky ten. It is ten words on stone, and a whole life spoken twice.
He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Words.
Where it shows up
01Spoken at the mountain
God speaks all these words. There is thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, and the sound of a trumpet. A people hears. They stand at a distance and ask Moses to stand in between.
02Written twice
Written with the finger of God. The first tablets break under a calf of gold. The words are written again. The covenant does not stay in pieces.
03He fills them
Do not think I have come to abolish. I have not come to abolish, but to fulfill. The ten words do not get smaller in His mouth. They get kept — down to the heart.
04The whole Law hangs
Love the Lord your God. Love your neighbour as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two. Ten words, two hooks, nothing leftover that does not fit.
Read it this way
Hebrew does not say “commandments” first. It says devarim, which means words. Aseret ha-devarim means the ten words.
God speaks them at the mountain, with thunder and a thick cloud. The people hear Him and ask Moses to stand in between, because the voice is too much. The words are written on stone with the finger of God, then broken under a golden calf, then written again, and carried in the ark. A whole life, spoken: no other gods, a name you do not empty, a day you stop, a father and mother you honour, a neighbour you do not kill or steal from or lie about or covet.
Jesus does not scrap them. He fills them. You have heard, but I say. Anger is already murder in the heart. A look is already adultery. Then He hangs the whole Law on two hooks: love the Lord your God with all your heart, love your neighbour as yourself. Ten words, two commands, one life. The Word who was there at the start still speaks them — and keeps them.

Ten is a spoken life, not a charm. The Word who was there at the start still speaks them — and keeps them.
