Twelve
A father has twelve sons. Then twelve men walk a road. Then twelve gates still carry their names.
These are the tribes of Israel, twelve in all, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them.
Where it shows up
01The twelve tribes
A dying father blesses twelve sons, each with his own saying. Twelve is not a cipher. It is sons, then a nation.
02Stones on the heart
Twelve stones on the high priest’s chest, each engraved with a name, like the engravings of a seal. He carries the whole people over his heart when he goes in.
03Stones in the river
Twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, where the priests’ feet stood. Stacked on the bank so the children will ask, and the crossing will be told.
04The twelve He sent
He calls twelve, and gives them authority. When one falls, they cast lots, and the lot falls on Matthias. The church is still a counted people. Eleven is not enough.
05Twelve gates, twelve names
The new city has a great high wall with twelve gates, and names written on them — the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. The count is not discarded in heaven. The old names are still on the doors.
Read it this way
Twelve is God’s people, counted out loud. It is not a mystic council. It is a family with names.
Jacob is dying. He blesses twelve sons, and a nation has a number you can say. The high priest later carries twelve stones on his chest, each with a name, so the whole people sit over his heart when he walks in. Joshua pulls twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan and stacks them on the bank, so the children will ask what they mean, and the crossing will be told again.
Jesus calls twelve, and the tribes stand up again in Galilee. When Judas falls, they pray and choose a twelfth — because the number is a people, not a secret club that can run on eleven. The city that comes down still has twelve gates, and the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel are still written on them. God does not hide twelve. He counts His people where you can read the names.
Some sayTwelve is a mystic council. Find the hidden twelfth and you find the real church.
