A prophet like Moses
Moses says someone like him is still coming. Listen to Him.
The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers. You must listen to him.
What happens
01They cannot bear the mountain
Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God, or see this great fire anymore, or we will die. Moses stands in between. He says that is not forever.
02A prophet like me
He will come from among you, from your brothers. You must listen to him. He will not be a foreign mouth. One of their own, with Moses’ kind of word.
03This is truly the Prophet
After the bread, the people reach for Deuteronomy. They are not wrong that a Prophet was promised. They are wrong about what they want Him for.
04Peter opens the book
Moses said, the Lord will raise up a prophet like me. Peter says: that day has arrived. Listen, or be cut off from the people.
05Listen to Him
A bright cloud covers them, and a voice speaks. This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him. Moses is there. The voice does not say listen to Moses.
Read it this way
Israel is afraid of the mountain. They ask Moses to stand in between. Moses says that arrangement is not the last one. God will raise up a prophet like me, from your brothers. Whoever will not listen, God will call to account. Nabi (נָבִיא) is a prophet — a mouth, not a magician.
After the loaves, the crowd says, this is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world. Peter, in the temple, opens Deuteronomy and says: Moses said this. Jesus is that prophet. On the mountain a voice cuts in: This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him. The old sentence gets a name.
Some sayEvery prophet is like Moses. This verse is not about one Man.
Moses already told them to listen. The voice on the mountain does not add a new religion. It names the Prophet.
