The line · 23 of 26 · Micah 5:2
The little town named in advance
It is not a capital. It is a small town, and it was named hundreds of years early.
But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too small to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from of old, from the days of eternity.
What happens
01Too small
Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah. The ruler does not come from the obvious city.
02From days of eternity
His goings forth are from of old. A birth in a small town, and an origin that is not small.
03Herod asks the teachers
Where is the Christ to be born? In Bethlehem of Judea. For so it is written by the prophet. They open the book. They do not invent a village.
04Does not the Scripture say
The Christ comes from David’s family, from Bethlehem, the village where David lived. Some used the verse to dismiss Him. The verse was still true.
Read it this way
Micah names a town: Bethlehem Ephrathah. The name means house of bread, in the old clan-country of Judah. Too small to sit with Judah’s big clans. From you, he says, One will go out for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from of old, from days of forever. That is not a local mayor.
Hundreds of years later Herod asks the teachers where the Christ is to be born. They do not guess. They open Micah and say Bethlehem. Matthew writes it down. In John 7 some still object: the Christ comes from Bethlehem, and this man is from Galilee. They had the town right. They had not walked to the house.
Some sayBethlehem is a Christmas card. The prophet never meant a real village for a real birth.
The map was marked. Matthew is reading the town the prophet named.
