First fruits
The first sheaf is waved. Then the rest of the field is not a guess. He rose, and Paul names the day.
When you come into the land and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord.
The appointed time
01Appointed times
These are the appointed feasts of the Lord. Holy convocations. Days He named, not days a decoder found.
02Wave the sheaf
The day after the Sabbath the priest waves it. The first of the harvest belongs to God before anyone eats the new grain.
03He was raised on the third day
Paul is already counting. Buried. Raised the third day, according to the Scriptures. Then he reaches for the sheaf.
04Christ the firstfruits
The firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Then those who belong to Him. The order is the point. A sheaf, then a field.
The first sheaf
Waved after the Sabbath. Given. The field still waits.
Then the rest
Those who belong to Him, at His coming.
Read it this way
Leviticus 23 lays out appointed times. After the Sabbath that follows Passover, a sheaf of the first of the harvest is waved. Bikkurim is first fruits — the beginning of the field, given to God, so the rest may be gathered. Nobody pretends the first sheaf is the whole harvest. It is the pledge that the field is coming.
Paul says it without blinking: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Then: each in his order, Christ the firstfruits, then those who belong to Him. The women walk to the tomb after the Sabbath, at dawn. The first sheaf of a new field. The day was already on the calendar.
Some sayFirstfruits is agricultural. Paul borrowing the word for Easter is later poetry.
The first sheaf is not the whole harvest. It is why you trust the field. Paul names who was waved.
