Elijah who was to come
The last Old Testament word is a man. Then Jesus names him, and they still missed him.
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.
What happens
01I will send you Elijah
The last word of the prophets is a man, before the day of the Lord. Hearts turned, or a land struck.
02In the spirit and power of Elijah
Gabriel already uses Malachi over John’s birth. He will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah. The angel does not wait for the Gospels to invent this.
03Are you Elijah?
John says, I am not. The page is honest. He will not take the name. Jesus will still give it.
04He is Elijah who is to come
If you are willing to accept it. The word is a door, not a force. Many were not willing.
05They did not recognise him
Elijah has already come. They did to him whatever they wanted. So also the Son of Man will suffer. Coming down the mountain, they understand He meant John.
Read it this way
Malachi ends the prophets with a name: Elijah. Before the day of the Lord. He will turn hearts of fathers and children, or the land is struck. Eliyahu is My God is Yahweh.
People ask Jesus why the scribes say Elijah must come first. He says Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. Then: Elijah has already come, and they did not know him. They did to him whatever they wanted. The disciples understand He is speaking of John. John himself said he was not Elijah. We do not flatten that. Jesus still names him that way. The sign was a man at the river, and a generation walked past him.
Some sayElijah must literally come first. John cannot be him. The prophecy is still waiting.
The last prophet said a name. Jesus said the name had already arrived. Missing him was not a lack of code. It was a lack of ears.
