The ram in the thicket
God asks Abraham for Isaac, the son he loves. The boy carries the wood up the hill. A ram dies instead.
God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.
What happens
01Take your son
God has given Abraham a boy in his old age. That boy is Isaac. Then God says: take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and offer him on a mountain I will show you.
02Wood on his back
They walk three days. Abraham leaves the servants at the bottom. He puts the wood for the fire on Isaac. He himself carries the knife. The boy still does not know.
03Where is the lamb?
Isaac looks around. Father, we have fire and wood. Where is the lamb for the offering? Abraham does not explain. God Himself will see to the lamb, my son.
04The knife
Abraham builds the altar. He binds Isaac. He lays him on the wood. He takes the knife to kill his son. Then a voice: do not lay a hand on the boy. The test was real. The death is not.
05A ram instead
Abraham looks up. A ram is stuck in a thicket by its horns. He offers the ram in Isaac’s place. He names the mountain The Lord Will See To It.
06Look, the Lamb of God
John does not invent a new picture. He points at a man and uses the old one. The ram was never the last word.
Meant to die
Isaac, the loved son, bound on the wood he carried up
Dies instead
A ram, caught in a thicket by its horns
Read it this way
The loved son was supposed to die on the wood he carried up. He did not. A ram, stuck in a bush by its horns, died in his place. Abraham names the mountain The Lord Will See To It. He is not hiding a code. He is naming what just happened.
Years later John points at Jesus and says, Look, the Lamb of God. Hebrews says Abraham already trusted God could raise the dead. Isaac lives because another dies in his place.
Some sayAbraham almost killing Isaac is a dark old story. Jesus is not in it.
Isaac walks back down because a ram dies on the wood. John later names who that ram was pointing at: the Lamb of God.
