Seventy
Seventy is a full seven, ten times over. It counts nations, elders, years, and weeks. Then He sends seventy more.
Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity.
Where it shows up
01Seventy souls to Egypt
All the persons of the house of Jacob who came into Egypt were seventy. Sons, grandsons, a whole people in a number you can still count. From this, a nation.
02Seventy elders
Come up to the Lord, you and seventy of the elders of Israel. Later Moses gathers seventy, and the Spirit rests on them, and they prophesy. The number is a people standing with him, not a code.
03Seventy years
This whole land a waste, and these nations serve the king of Babylon seventy years. A wait with an end. Daniel will read this in the scrolls, and he will pray.
04Seventy weeks
To finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to anoint a most holy. The angel is not handing Daniel a hobby for date-setters.
05He sent them on ahead
The Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them two by two into every town where He Himself was about to go. Some copies say seventy-two. We do not hide the seam. The sending is the point: a counted people, ahead of Him.
Read it this way
Shivim (שִׁבְעִים) means seventy, which is seven tens. It is a full week, ten times over. It is not a lock to pick.
Jacob’s whole house goes down to Egypt seventy strong: sons, grandsons, a people you can still count. Moses is told to bring seventy of the elders up the mountain, and later the Spirit rests on seventy, and they prophesy. Jeremiah, watching the land come apart, hears a number with an end: this whole land a waste, and these nations serve Babylon seventy years. Daniel, reading Jeremiah, prays — and an angel answers with a longer filling of the same number: seventy weeks, to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for iniquity, to anoint a most holy.
We do not turn Daniel into a calendar you can weaponise. People have tried. They were wrong, and they will be wrong again. What the page does say: the number is a complete people, a complete wait, a complete sending. Jesus sends seventy (some copies: seventy-two) ahead of Him, two by two, into every town. We do not hide the seam in the copies. The sending is the point: a counted people on the road, not a date you own.
Some saySeventy is a countdown clock. Decode Daniel and you get the date of the end.
Seventy finishes a count. It is not a timer you own. Daniel already said atone. Luke then sends a people out.
